Description

Archives of Humanity creates a living and emotive meditation on human existence, a reflection on where we suddenly and unexpectedly find ourselves today. The work begins with an immersive and tactile journey through a remarkable set – a flock of birds, created by and carrying the stories of our WA community in isolation. Released, the birds united soar as a collective symbol of endurance and hope. These sweeping narratives, of memories, desires and aspirations lead you into the theatre. A stunning score opens the performance, marking the next migration, echoing the movements of the dancers in a gradual and persistent climbing arc of cyclical patterns. Some of the art world’s most striking scenes are reimagined in humanity’s tumultuous bid to transcend. To rise, to fall, but to always try to rise again – together.

WORLD PREMIERE

Submerge yourself in a poetic reimagining of the classic Australian seaside drama for our cataclysmic times.

Nadine returns to her beachside home, and the family she abandoned, to reconnect with her daughter. Now oceans apart, she must navigate her ex-husband’s anger at her departure and learn to accept and support her now son Caleb, with his desire to begin medically affirming his gender.

A deeply personal and poetic story, Whale Fall is a slow-burning family drama about second chances and unconditional love, charting transition across generations, family dynamics, the human body and our ecological future.

Central to the work is the story of a dying whale as it slowly descends to the seafloor and forms a new biodiverse ecosystem known as a ‘whale fall’.

Inspired by environmental writer Rebecca Giggs’ essay of the same name, Whale Fall features rich visual language, intimate performances, and immersive design to conjure the familiarity of the Australian coast. Created by an exceptional team of WA theatre-makers, this new work brings together people from different backgrounds that identify with and support the trans, gender diverse and queer communities.

Description

'Spume' refers to the foam produced by the churning of water, capping the waves or leaving tidelines on a riverbed. Pip Lewi's drawings chart an 'urban spume' in vivid texta, pens and layers of correction fluid, chronicling detritus and markings left in the city by tides of human activity. Over the course of the Festival Pip's works with ebb and flow, appearing on the Festival's online platforms, public screens and sidewalks throughout the city. This ephemeral ode to the overlooked culminates in an intimate walking tour and guided meditation, refocusing the eye and mind on the finer details of things that wash up on the shores of out vision. Keep an eye out for what washes up in between Newcastle Street, Elizabeth Quay, Barrack/Beaufort Street and King Street/Lake Street in Northbridge and Perth City.
